Editorial policy
daily.hockey publishes NHL scores, statistics and short game write-ups. This page explains where that content comes from, which parts are written by software, and how to tell us when something is wrong.
Scores, schedules and statistics
Scores, schedules, rosters, standings and box scores come from the NHL's public data feeds and update automatically, usually within seconds of the league's own updates. Advanced metrics (shot attempts, expected goals, PDO and on-ice rates) are calculated by us from the league's play-by-play data; the glossary on the stats page explains each one. Starting goalie projections are our own estimates from each team's recent usage until the NHL confirms the starters.
AI-written previews and recaps
Some game previews and recaps are written with the help of AI, using only official NHL data. Before anything is published it passes several layers of automated checks against that data, and each article is labelled as AI-written where it appears. The box score and play-by-play on the same page are the official record; if an article ever disagrees with them, the data wins and we correct or remove the article.
AI-written articles never:
- predict the result of a game;
- quote anyone or report injuries;
- present a projected starting goalie as confirmed.
Game previews and summaries that aren't labelled as AI-written are generated directly from the data by templates, without a language model.
News headlines
The news section links to stories from hundreds of hockey publishers. We show each story's headline, source and a short excerpt and send readers to the publisher to read it. We don't rewrite or republish their reporting.
Independence and advertising
daily.hockey is independent and supported by advertising. Advertisers have no say over what we publish. We are not affiliated with the NHL, the NHLPA or any team.
