How it works
Each game left on the schedule is decided by the two teams’ strength plus a small home-ice edge, and about a quarter of games go to overtime or a shootout, where the loser gets a point. A team’s strength blends its points percentage and its 5-on-5 share of expected goals, both pulled toward league average early in the season, and each run varies it a little because nobody knows exactly how good a team is.
Three teams per division and two wild cards per conference make it. Ties go to regulation wins, then regulation and overtime wins, then wins; the NHL’s head-to-head and goal-difference tiebreakers aren’t modelled. Teams the NHL marks as clinched or eliminated are shown that way. See also the standings.
